"For as far back as I can remember, the line between fantasy and reality has been hopelessly blurred" Roman Polanski

Collaborative SLate

October 31, 2005

ITs so hard for me to tlak alot about my collaborateive slate because we are doing the launch for the class.

The idea is basically to give everyone an oppurtunity to impress someone who may want something to do with us one day.

Oven and I have gone for the Covergence theme, Analogue technology meets Digital. Aside from that we need people to tell us what they would like, we also need a place to show it all off. Either way it is a cool idea, and i am quite happy to give a Media Event a real crack.

Feature

At the moment I am writing my first feature. This is the first time I’ve actually admitted this to someone besides Rachel and Rupert. To be perfectly honest, I have finished writing the feature already and am on to the 3rd draft.
It has been an incredible thing to do. I originally wrote the treatment, and then sat down, and for four days straight I wrote the script, all 76 pages of it.

It reads well, I’m not going to lead on about the plot etc, not because I don’t want anyone to steal the idea, but because I am more comfortable with a project when less people know about it, so don’t ask me anything about it.

When I make this feature, I want to Direct it, I already have the key principles in mind, but I have only officially asked one person to be a part of it.

I’ve learnt a lot from writing the script. I have learnt to maintain the character traits within the order of a movie. I hate seeing a movie when a character performs an action or says something that he/she would never have said/done in the beginning of the film. Hence the reason I wrote it over 4 sleepless days, to maintain those traits.

I listened to a lot of music, something I never did with Old Man Time, now I have a clear idea in my head about the music, and also the characters. I think my writing is definitely influenced by Tarantino and to a lesser extent the Coens. There is also a lot of cockney style phrases, as Rupert put it, “That’s how its gonna be, see”.

The movie is my own idea, but the themes draw from Jonathan Glazer’s ‘Sexy Beast’, which is one of my favourite films. The themes are drawn directly from personal spaces as well, what’s the old adage? “You only write what you know”….. I don’t know about that, what about Star Wars?

Hindsight

I still have a long way to go on Old Man Time, and when Gargi finally gets out of the MMP suite Oven and I will get in there.

Oven is now the new editor, but i will talk about that more in a minute.

I decided to take a brief sojourn so i could have a bit more time to think about the project before the most crucial part. I learnt some new things. I have learnt that I can work all day, and that there is such a need for a solid working relationship with your key principles.

One reason why the Oven is editing is because i trust him. Although he and i differ in quite a number of ways, we have a similar attitude to work, we tend to employ a lot of initiative.

Oven has already given me some great ideas about what he wants to do, i asked him because he has the know how, and i think he has got a lot of talent under that nonchalant Germanic skin of his (i know he is Norwegian, but Oven knows what i mean)

Musically, Jules has some ideas for the soundtrack, as does Rupert. Rupert had quite a bit to do with this film creativly in the Pre Production, so i am confident between the three of us we can work out something.

Finally, when i finish the 1st cut (and we pick up a crucial missing shot) we will be able to have the film graded, Oven was talking about doing it, or we can have it done professionally, but thats not for a while yet.

After FX

Ive referenced Onlines here because he talks about After FX so fondly.

I last used After FX a while back in second year at QCA. While i liked it, i just never had the will to use it, because i never had the know how. Now after seeing it in action with Leo Berkeley showing us the ropes, it becomes obvious that my films could definatley have used a bit of help from After FX.

i think i benefited from watching Leo do his thang and shooting my film before learning After FX, because now i can see where i can employ it in my film. There are a few things i have to learn. Such as, the reflection of the TV on the main characters face, there is alot more that i can do, but i will leave that for another blog.

I dont like to use to many effects though, after a while i think even the mighty Adobe packages can start to look repeated, familiar and ultimatley tacky, so if i were to use After FX, it will be very subtle, i happen to like straight forward editing, unless the movie is Easy Rider.

Pro Tools

We used Pro Tools the other day. I have used it before, but this was the most success i have had with it. Having the big mixing desk next to the console was what really opened my eyes. I am someone who onlyu really learns by doing, Theory is wasted on an idiot like me.

I have since decided to use foley sound in my OMT individual now. There is a lot of things i can fix up, footsteps, doors slamming, the idle of the bus etc.

There is not much i can get into, as we really didnt dig that deep, i have used it on my own quite a lot and i would have liked to have done some more complex things, in saying that though i did need a bit of a brush up, and i have to admit, the Pro Tools room down there is actually quite impressive. What i wouldnt do for that in my spare room.
