“I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it” - Voltaire
I love that quote. It applies strongly to my ethic with films. I blame a lot of Australia’s film industry problems on the sound proof blanket that seems to cover a large part of Australian filmmakers.
All the films that are commissioned are in such a similar vein they seem to all mesh into one after a while. To typify an Australian film I imagine a dull, relatively boring plot, with a man who seems to be the Patriarch of a relationship and the subservient woman, who dresses in a free flowing dress, no bra, no shoes, no make up and generally looking a mess. Throw in a best mate oft than not named either bazza, dazza, razza, gazza, tezza, Robbo, jonno or Bluey and WALLA! You have a quintessential AFC funded film. They then make sure the film making process is not experimental or daring in anyway, carbon copy it in the mould of the horrible Lantana and there it is.
I would love for once, for the AFC to just decided to fuck it all and just find a bunch of guys like me and Onlines and just trust us with $1 000 000 to make a film. I can guarantee we would blow them away, the Aussie Industry would enter a new renaissance, people would see films they have never seen in Australia before, and I don’t mean just from Onlines and me, but from a whole bunch of young guys and gals like us
But the alluding back to the opening quote, the AFC does not agree with Voltaire. Their quote would be more like “I don’t like what your saying, so you can go to hell” - AFC
